Food: Where Does It Come From?

Class: 6th Standard | Subject: Science | Chapter 1

Introduction

Food is essential for the survival of all living beings. It gives us energy, helps us grow, and keeps us healthy. But have you ever wondered where the food we eat actually comes from? In this chapter, we will explore the sources of food, different types of food, and how they reach us.

Different Food Items We Eat

India is a diverse country with a wide variety of food habits. For example, in northern India, people eat wheat-based foods like roti, while in southern India, rice is more common. Despite the variety, food items can generally be classified into the following:

  • Grains (rice, wheat, barley)
  • Pulses (chana, moong, masoor)
  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Animal products (milk, eggs, meat, fish)
  • Spices and oils

Sources of Food

There are two main sources of food:

  • Plants: We get fruits, vegetables, grains, pulses, and oils from different parts of plants.
  • Animals: We get milk, eggs, meat, and honey from animals.

Plant Parts and Animal Products as Food

We eat different parts of plants:

  • Roots: Carrot, radish, beetroot
  • Stems: Sugarcane, potato
  • Leaves: Spinach, coriander
  • Fruits: Mango, apple, banana
  • Seeds: Rice, wheat, pulses

Animal-based food products include:

  • Milk: From cows, buffaloes, goats
  • Eggs: Mostly from hens
  • Meat: From goats, chickens, and fish
  • Honey: Produced by bees from flower nectar

Food Habits

People around the world eat different kinds of food. Some are:

  • Herbivores: Animals that eat only plants (e.g., cow, goat)
  • Carnivores: Animals that eat only other animals (e.g., lion, tiger)
  • Omnivores: Animals (and humans) that eat both plants and animals (e.g., humans, bear)

Activity Ideas

💡 Try this: Make a list of all the food items you eat in one day and identify their sources — plant or animal.

Conclusion

This chapter helps us understand the importance of food and where it comes from. It teaches us to be more aware and respectful towards the resources that provide us nourishment. Knowing our food sources also helps us make better, healthier choices.
